One recent article  discusses the link between stress and deviant behavior such as gambling.  People who are problem gamblers tend to bet for hours upon hours.  While it may seem relaxing in the beginning but after spending much more money than intended the stress will increase.  It almost can send someone into panic mode. Yet a compulsive gambler will continue pouring money into their game of choice with hopes that things will change.

So how does a compulsive gambler reduce stress?  The first thing is to seek help.   When a gambler admits he or she needs help and chooses to get that help there can be a sense of automatic relief.  It is similar to getting something off your chest with someone because the worrying is killing you.   Often times the other person is happy you had the courage to share what was bothering you.  Moreover, it’s usually not as bad as a problem as one made it in their head.

Stress, like a gambling addiction, is not meant to be taken on by oneself.  We all need help handing life’s challenges.  So there are skills one can practice .  A person can participate in a hobby with a friend or family member such as running, reading or cooking.  Many people find that other distractions like playing with grandchildren are helpful.  Gamblers Anonymous meetings are also a great way to manage the stresses that go along with a gambling problem.

Prayer and  meditation are other ways to manage stress when there may be no one else around.  Mindfulness is another great way to handle stress.  Mindfulness is the process by which a person focuses on their five senses (hearing, seeing, touching, feeling, and smelling) and concentrates on the here and now.  In other words, if a person stays in the moment and keeps their thoughts from wandering then they are practicing mindfulness.
